This blog post explores how Life Sciences applicants can articulate their research experience in their academic plan, focusing on specific processes and lessons learned, to more persuasively demonstrate their investigative capabilities and suitability for the major.
Reasons for Pursuing This Major
When I had to choose my academic track in my sophomore year, I selected the science track without hesitation. This decision stemmed from the advice of my homeroom teacher, who taught biology. This teacher sparked my interest in science and related fields, teaching me the diverse facets of science through discussions.
This teacher emphasized the need to approach scientific problems with a broad perspective and meticulously guided me on aspects I hadn’t considered, greatly aiding my career choice. The experiments I conducted with this teacher were immensely enjoyable, and I often stayed up all night eagerly awaiting the results.
This experience ignited a desire to continue studying, fueled by the pure passion I felt back then, ultimately leading me to apply to the Department of Life Sciences. Upon entering your university, I also wish to conduct experiments in a laboratory alongside distinguished professors.
Academic Plan and Goals
While life sciences are a fascinating field exploring and discovering the principles of life, I also recognize it as a physically demanding discipline requiring constant time spent at the lab bench. Therefore, to maintain the stamina needed to persistently conduct experiments, I will first build my physical strength by swimming three times a week. If I am accepted into your laboratory, I will thoroughly review previously published research findings. Considering various factors, I will plan and execute the best possible experiments.
Even if results differ from expectations, I will not be discouraged. I will maintain an open mind, allowing myself the flexibility to infer various scenarios that may challenge my initial hypotheses. I plan to study my major diligently, driven by a reverence for life and a curiosity to uncover its mysteries. The unexplored frontiers of life science are endless, and countless secrets of life remain undiscovered. I dream of venturing step by step into uncharted territory, unraveling life’s unsolved riddles where no one has tread before.
Post-Graduation Plans
Life science is a fascinating research field where one contemplates various biological phenomena, formulates hypotheses, and discovers new principles through verification. Therefore, I aspire to become a life scientist in the future. I wish to contribute to the advancement of science and humanity through numerous research outcomes. Furthermore, if given the opportunity, I would like to contribute to building research infrastructure, including science education, in my country.
Specifically, I wish to pursue research that integrates engineering with ethical principles, such as biomedical engineering or developing systems for people with disabilities. I aspire to become a true life scientist who develops systems that harmonize naturally with people and assist them, rather than forcing technology into our lives.
Self-Introduction (Life Philosophy, Values)
Having always lived at school following my father, who was an elementary school principal, the school library was my life’s workplace. My habit of being unable to put a book down until I finished it grew into a determination to see any challenge or problem through to its solution. While waiting for my father, I broadened my horizons by reading math and science books meant for my older brothers. I also taught myself computer skills and earned a word processor certification while still in elementary school.
Our school principal always told us, ‘Burn the flame of intellect.’ This meant, “To achieve your goals, strive with passion, as if burning a flame.” I deeply engraved this teaching in my heart and engaged in various activities to cultivate my intellect and improve my lacking abilities. Currently, I am preparing for the future by reading many books in the library to discover and nurture my infinite potential in intellect, emotion, creativity, and more.
