Growth Process
“A tidy house leads to a clear mind.” This was my mother’s firm belief, as she led our family’s big weekend clean-ups. As a child, I heard this phrase countless times while cleaning with my mother whenever I messed up my room. Back then, it felt somewhat exaggerated, like a story from another world. But as I grew older, I finally understood its deeper meaning. I realized that for humans, who are greatly influenced by visual elements, the tidiness of one’s surroundings directly leads to peace of mind and clarity of thought. My mother’s words weren’t just about enforcing habits; they embodied a philosophy for enhancing the quality of life.
Since then, I’ve naturally grown to enjoy cleaning and organizing. Compared to other boys my age, I was often told I had a deft touch. Adults would frequently praise me when they saw me neatly folding and storing my changed clothes and socks anywhere, making my bed, or even cleaning the floor thoroughly. This standard of neatness influenced all aspects of my life, making me mindful of the impression I gave others. From a young age, I learned ironing from my mother, developing the habit of wearing shirts and pants pressed smooth. As a result, my ‘neatness’ transcended mere spatial cleanliness, becoming a core value permeating my entire life.
I believe: A tidy environment fosters tidy thoughts, a tidy impression draws people’s favor, and a tidy finish leaves no unnecessary afterthoughts. My mother’s ‘organization philosophy’—gathering the family every Sunday to wield brooms and mops—was not merely a tedious childhood chore. As time passed, I became an adult who had engraved that philosophy in body and mind, applying it naturally throughout life. That very neatness became the most crucial habit and value that shaped who I am today.
School Days
During my school years, I never held positions like class president or head of an important committee. Instead, I always took charge of the cleaning crew, leading the classroom cleanup by directing the less dexterous boys. The area I was responsible for remained cleaner and more organized than any other, earning me the deep trust of my teachers. The other children, however, often complained about the excessive labor, asking, “Do we really need to be this clean?” just as I had in my childhood. However, once a space was thoroughly cleaned, even the smallest speck of dust became immediately noticeable. Eventually, the children gradually grew accustomed to the clean environment I cultivated, even as they grumbled.
It might seem a bit odd, but I had a very personal hobby. Whenever my mind felt cluttered, I would go to the supermarket and spend ages browsing cleaning supplies or newly released detergents. I’d imagine sweeping away the dust in my mind with a broom, or picturing sticky, clinging mental residue being completely dissolved. It felt like the small worries and pressures of life were being washed away too. Of course, almost no one understood this hobby, but I realized early on, at a young age, that I dealt with my troubles in a slightly different way than other children.
Looking back, my mother’s influence was significant. From childhood, she made me familiar with cleaning and trained me to perceive the cleanliness of everyday spaces as mental images. Over time, this habit evolved into the ability to remember the properties of objects or things by substituting them with images, and to use this as a basis for generating ideas or absorbing new knowledge. Thanks to this, I could think a bit more flexibly than other children, and it became my own know-how that I still use effectively today when understanding new concepts or studying. Ultimately, cleaning wasn’t just a household chore; for me, it was a way to organize my thoughts and solidify my life.
Personality Introduction
When assessing someone’s personality, I tend to pay attention to their cleanliness and how they handle their belongings. A tendency to haphazardly pile things up or fail to properly organize one’s surroundings often goes beyond mere attachment; it can also indicate an inability to efficiently arrange the space around oneself. Those who struggle to clearly distinguish between what is necessary and what is unnecessary typically exhibit similar patterns in their interpersonal relationships. Furthermore, since cleanliness is an area that requires consistent management and attention to maintain, I believe it also reveals a person’s level of diligence. Holding this belief, I too always make thorough preparations and strive to consistently maintain my surroundings and external cleanliness.
Of course, this perspective might seem like a prejudice. However, since humans are fundamentally visual beings, how one maintains the space within their field of vision is a crucial indicator that reveals their unconscious habits and tendencies. Many people feel trust in others because of the persistence to regularly tidy their surroundings, the efficiency to accurately distinguish necessity from excess, and the organized mindset that mirrors a clean room. I believe these elements directly reflect a person’s attitude and values. Ultimately, cleanliness and order transcend mere lifestyle habits; they are like a mirror reflecting one’s inner self.
Life Philosophy
I think the human mind is similar to a computer in that it functions as a ‘memory’ storing vast amounts of information. If you use a computer for a long time without formatting it or properly managing installed programs, it slows down and starts to lag. The human mind is no different. Without continuous organization, thoughts become cluttered and processing speed declines. Yet, many people get annoyed at a slow computer and try hard to organize its programs, while leaving the clutter in their own minds untouched. Perhaps because the brain and mind aren’t visible, even when we sense the need for organization, we tend to put it off.
That’s why I believe ‘image training’ is even more important. The less visible something is, the more we need a process to transform it into a visible form for recognition. For example, imagine discarding unnecessary trash while visualizing the process of clearing out useless information from your mind. Utilizing such visual imagery makes mental organization far more effective. This method is also useful when processing complex data, formulas, or new knowledge. By transforming abstract concepts that are hard to grasp into concrete, tangible scenes, they become much easier to remember.
When memorizing, writing things down while committing them to memory is far better than just repeating them verbally. Combining the act of ‘writing’ with the knowledge you want to memorize, physically moving your hand to record it, leaves a vivid impression, as if you were writing the content directly into your mind. This way, when you recall that information later, it’s not just simple letters; the scene and sensations of writing it down are replayed too, making the memory much clearer.
In this way, I have made it a lifelong principle to visualize information in my mind, discard the unnecessary, and store the important by linking it to visual scenes. This has become an indispensable principle not just for studying or work skills, but for organizing and refining my overall thoughts and actions. Ultimately, it stems from my belief that order in one’s mind directly translates to order in one’s life.
