What expertise can a production engineering major bring to a general sales role?

This blog post introduces how production engineering majors can effectively highlight their differentiated expertise in a resume for general sales roles, leveraging their process understanding and problem-solving capabilities.

Growth Background

“Challenge yourself with perseverance!”
Since childhood, I lacked the perseverance to consistently stick with and delve deeply into one thing. My habit of quickly losing interest and easily giving up on things often led to scoldings from my parents, who frequently pointed out my lack of patience. They always emphasized, “You must cultivate the perseverance and patience to see any task through to the end,” and those words were deeply engraved in my young mind. However, since it wasn’t as easy as I wished, I decided to take concrete action to overcome my shortcomings.
My first challenge was the marathon. At the time, announcements for events like the History Marathon and Youth Marathon for students were often posted around school, and most students would pass by without much interest. But I resolved to use these opportunities as a stepping stone for my challenge. Even though I had no friends to join me, I decided to participate alone. I actually started participating steadily in various events, beginning my battle with myself. To complete a marathon, I regularly ran at Hangang Park to build stamina, gradually pushing myself to run longer distances and slowly surpassing my limits.
Initially, the grueling training and temptations to quit were numerous, but through this process, I gradually learned perseverance and patience. I came to understand firsthand the meaning of ‘persevering without giving up until the end.’ The habit of challenging myself became part of my life and settled into a hobby. Ultimately, through the challenge of marathon running, I was able to gradually cultivate the grit I had previously felt was lacking. This experience positively influenced my approach to other endeavors afterward. It was a valuable time where I realized that perseverance and patience aren’t cultivated instantly, but grow little by little through repeated challenges and trial and error.

Strengths and Weaknesses of My Personality

“The Story of the Willpower That Quit Smoking”
It’s a bit embarrassing to admit, but I started smoking in middle school. Back then, I didn’t even know what problems smoking could cause; I just started out of curiosity, following my friends. As time passed and I entered high school, I smoked so many cigarettes daily that I earned the nickname “chain smoker.” While I wasn’t part of the school’s troublemakers or engaged in problematic behavior, I couldn’t escape the negative stares and stigma simply because I smoked heavily.
Truthfully, I often thought about quitting. But the habit was hard to break, and I naively believed I could stop anytime I truly wanted to. Then, when I entered university, I made a new resolution to myself: to quit smoking. Around that time, I enlisted in the military, and my resolve to never smoke again became even more urgent. However, reality was far from easy. During my military service and early career, especially while working in the construction industry, cigarettes were often seen as a kind of ‘communication tool’. I was frequently offered cigarettes, and there were many moments when I nearly got swept up in the social atmosphere.
Nevertheless, I made a firm resolution to quit smoking for the sake of my ‘health,’ ‘stamina,‘ ‘future self,’ and ‘family.’ Working on construction sites was physically demanding, and I often found myself gasping for breath. Each time, I felt firsthand how smoking severely impacted my stamina and breathing. I understood the necessity of quitting more keenly than anyone. To stay disciplined, I announced my decision to quit to those around me and sometimes asked for their support. Initially, I switched to e-cigarettes as a way to gradually break free from nicotine addiction. By maintaining this smoke-free lifestyle for about six months, I gained far more than just quitting cigarettes.
Through the process of quitting, I learned patience and perseverance, gaining the confidence and willpower to believe, “If I set my mind to it, I can do anything.” While I used to tire easily and be indecisive as a smoker, after quitting, I maintained a much stronger stance in pushing forward with work, and my proactiveness and enterprising mindset greatly improved. Above all, I want to challenge the common saying that “people who quit smoking have a tough personality.” Quitting smoking doesn’t necessarily require a tough personality. I’m not someone who pushes others away or acts harshly; I simply wanted to stick to my own resolution. I believe that quitting smoking is something anyone can achieve, not by being tough, but by having the strength to quietly keep a promise to oneself.
Ultimately, quitting smoking became more than just breaking a habit for me; it was an opportunity to transform my very character and attitude toward life. The willpower gained from that experience remains a crucial driving force in my life today and instilled an unshakable confidence to face any future challenge. Even now, I often reflect on how precious that determination and effort were. What seemed like a flaw in the past ultimately became the catalyst that made me stronger.

School Days

During my school years, I focused on the field of production engineering and began to solidify my career path. Within production engineering, I was particularly drawn to mechanical design engineering, deciding to major in this specific area and diving into my studies. At university, I strived to balance theory and practice, taking not only fundamental industrial mathematics courses but also various hands-on subjects like mechanical workshops. This learning process wasn’t merely about earning credits; it was crucial groundwork for preparing the future I envisioned. My chosen path was to work at a specialized company in production engineering or construction engineering. Rather than simply rushing ahead, I aimed to become a talent who grows step by step. This mindset naturally shaped my approach to learning during my university years.
I believed learning should not be a linear progression from easy to difficult, but rather each stage should be organically connected. Therefore, I first solidly studied foundational subjects like Calculus, Engineering Mathematics, and General Physics to build a strong base. Later, using this foundation, I expanded my learning into more practical subjects such as Machine Shop Practice, Mechanics of Materials, and Machine Element Design. Subsequently, I deepened my knowledge by completing advanced design and analysis-focused courses like measurement practice, machine dynamics, optimal design, and tolerance design. This step-by-step approach, linking content from foundational to advanced levels, enabled me to build a more solid and systematic understanding of my major. This university experience continues to form the foundation of my technical mindset and problem-solving abilities, remaining a steadfast asset for my future path.

Life Motto

“Accumulate mileage for good deeds.”
I don’t subscribe to the idea that one must live unconditionally good or insist only on virtuous actions. The concept of ‘goodness’ varies by individual, and what constitutes a ‘good deed’ might be something only I perceive as such. Therefore, I don’t believe unconditional goodness is always right. However, when it comes to actions considered good from an objective and universal perspective, I consciously strive to practice them frequently. In other words, I live with the mindset of steadily accumulating ‘goodness mileage’.
For instance, I actively participate in activities like regular blood donations, giving up my seat on the subway, signing up for organ donation pledge campaigns, or showing interest in social issues like the Sewol Ferry disaster and responding to related surveys. I engage in these actions because I recognize we are never truly solitary beings within society. I believe that when I take the initiative to play a small role for others and society, that goodness will eventually return to me in some form.
To be more specific, I make it a point to donate blood at least once a month. While receiving the blood donation certificate brings a sense of satisfaction, I find even greater fulfillment in the fact that I can help someone. And I believe that if I ever find myself sick or in need of help, someone donating blood for me could be the life-saving force of that good will. If I donate blood frequently now and actively promote its importance to those around me, fostering a supportive environment, I believe that warmth will be passed on somewhere in society when I or my family need blood in the future.
Of course, these actions aren’t done expecting something in return. However, I believe that actively creating a positive atmosphere myself, and trusting that I too might receive help within that flow, connects to my responsibility as a member of society. Ultimately, accumulating ‘goodness mileage’ means planting small seeds of positive influence in the world, and it gives me hope that I too can become part of that warm influence someday. This is the life principle I strive to uphold.

Motivation and Aspirations

“A person with voluntary cooperation and wise perseverance.”
Doosan’s management philosophy is rooted in the belief that the growth of people is the growth of the business. I deeply resonate with the fact that, under the firm creed of being a ‘people-centered company,’ all the company’s flows move with its members at the center. I believe an organization is not a structure where people fit into predetermined molds, but rather a living entity shaped by its people. This is because the spontaneity and organic communication of each individual member determine the organization’s culture and atmosphere. Therefore, I want to define myself not as a mere component performing a role, but as an organic entity driving change and growth. A person who communicates proactively and can effectively convey their own ideas even within collaboration – that is precisely the ideal talent I aspire to be.
Doosan Heavy Industries’ power generation equipment sector is an area I’ve been deeply involved in for over a decade. While it feels cautious to call myself a capable professional, I possess pride and confidence in this field, built on years of accumulated experience and expertise. Beyond technical competence, I’ve gained practical, hands-on skills and learned a people-centered approach to problem-solving through diverse real-world situations and challenges encountered on-site.
Doosan Heavy Industries is achieving sustained growth across diverse industries including construction, transportation equipment, and green energy. I aspire to breathe and contribute at the heart of this growth. Specifically, in this recruitment area, as an experienced hire, I aim to grow by putting into practice the true meaning of two words: ‘voluntary teamwork’ and ‘wise perseverance’. When I first started my career, I understood the importance of teamwork and perseverance, but I didn’t fully grasp the deeper meaning of the adjectives ‘voluntary’ and ‘wise’ attached to them. I simply thought perseverance meant working long hours and hard, and that teamwork existed if collaboration happened without issues.
However, through diverse experiences, I’ve come to realize that true teamwork is ‘voluntary cooperation’—something created through one’s own desire and effort—and that perseverance, too, signifies not mere tenacity but ‘efficient and strategic effort.’ I now believe I’ve reached a position where I can work while truly appreciating the subtle differences and weight these words carry. As a member of Doosan Heavy Industries, I aspire to embody this mindset and establish myself as a leader who positively influences my team. Building on my experience and skills, I will contribute to the team and organization with a constant willingness to learn, growing together.
