This blog post will guide you on the experiences, practical skills, and key points to emphasize effectively in your cover letter when applying for a production management role.
Personal Growth
My father always told me, “If you have the perseverance to see any task through to the end, you will surely succeed.” His life journey truly embodied that belief. He spent his entire life in business, facing numerous crises and trials—including three bankruptcies—yet he never gave up, rising again each time. I grew up watching my father like this, and that process profoundly shaped my growth and values.
In his youth, he came to Seoul alone and experienced a wide variety of jobs, trying almost everything. During that time, he nurtured his dream of entrepreneurship. Although his first business venture ended in failure, he used that experience as a stepping stone and successfully made a comeback. He then put into action a business idea he had been contemplating for a long time, and the results were quite encouraging. However, just when everything seemed to be going smoothly, the bankruptcy of a business partner triggered a domino effect, plunging my father’s business into a chain of crises, ultimately leading to bankruptcy once again. Even so, my father never gave up. He endured another period of hardship, preparing for his comeback.
After rebuilding his foundation, he expanded his vision beyond the domestic market to overseas. Initially, his international venture seemed successful, but rapidly changing local conditions led to bankruptcy once more, forcing him to return to Korea. While most people might have abandoned their business ambitions and chosen a different path at this point, my father did not. Believing that “what you learn is what you know,” and firmly convinced that business was ultimately what he could do best, he embarked on yet another challenge. This time, he achieved even greater success than before.
Having observed my father like this for so long, I naturally developed the conviction that whatever I undertake, I must see it through to the end without giving up midway. The word ‘give up’ is foreign to me; the attitude of striving to reach the finish line no matter what difficulties arise is ingrained in me. From my father, I learned what the living embodiment of perseverance truly means, and I am proud to resemble him in this way. In this way, my father’s life became the root of my own, shaping my attitude, values, and serving as a crucial benchmark for the path ahead.
School Days
“Time spent growing through relationships with people”
I believe my school years were, above all, a time focused on ‘forming relationships with people’. During elementary school, I recall having little interest in books and pouring all my energy into playing with friends. At that time, my father’s business was successful, and our family circumstances were very comfortable. Thanks to this, I could live carefree, free, and abundant days.
Entering middle school, my relationships with friends deepened further. I enjoyed spending time with my friends so much that I would eat meals at their houses almost every day and often return home late at night. This period coincided with my father’s business going bankrupt, causing our family’s financial situation to become significantly unstable. Naturally, I felt more comfortable spending time with friends than at home. However, thanks to that environment, I became friends with everyone—so much so that if anyone in my class or even the entire school didn’t know me, they’d be considered an outsider. Back then, I spent every day hanging out with friends. I never worried about meals or even had time to feel lonely; mentally, it was a very fulfilling time.
After entering high school, I gradually began to take an interest in my studies, but I spent more time taking charge of household duties and caring for my family. My mother’s health deteriorated rapidly, and our family circumstances fluctuated between improvement and renewed hardship, creating an unstable situation that naturally led me to take on most of the household responsibilities. Initially, it seemed like my mother was recovering quickly, but as time passed, she eventually became bedridden. I had to care for my younger siblings while balancing my studies and household duties. It was a challenging situation, but fortunately, I had many good friends around me who helped without hesitation whenever something came up. Thanks to them, I was always able to live in an emotionally stable and warm environment.
Later, when I entered university, I pursued dual majors in Accounting and Production and Operations Management, building broad and deep knowledge across the entire business spectrum. Through Accounting, I focused on learning financial accounting, management accounting, cost accounting, and tax accounting, mastering how to systematically record and manage a company’s capital and developing the ability to analyze and understand cash flow. Simultaneously, studying Production and Operations Management exposed me to diverse theories and practices, including SCM, global sourcing, efficient production strategies, and quality control. This provided me with a comprehensive understanding of the entire value chain—from raw material development and procurement through production, logistics, distribution, sales, and customer management—covering the entire journey a product takes to reach the customer.
Thus, my academic years were more than just studies; they were times of growth through relationships with people, learning responsibility and realism through life’s twists and turns, and building professional knowledge upon that foundation. I believe these experiences are the precious foundation that shaped me and will serve as an even greater driving force for my future life.
Strengths and Weaknesses of My Personality
“Tenacity that refuses to accept failure”
I consider the greatest strength of my personality to be my ‘tenacity that refuses to give up’. This tenacity goes beyond mere endurance in difficult situations; it stems from an attitude of taking responsibility for a task until its completion once I’ve started it. During my university years, I gained experience through various part-time jobs, and it was during this time that this strength in my character began to naturally emerge. One particularly memorable experience was when I went to the United States alone, wanting to test my own potential, and worked as a waiter at a Japanese restaurant.
Initially, I thought it would suffice to simply take orders and serve food, as I had done in Korea. However, service standards abroad were different, and I began receiving complaints from customers that I “didn’t meet expectations.” Compounded by language barriers and cultural differences, the situation grew increasingly difficult, eventually putting me at risk of being fired. Honestly, quitting might have been easier. But I didn’t do that. I detest ‘failure,’ especially failure due to lack of effort. So I earnestly begged my boss for forgiveness and resolved to change myself to avoid giving up.
From that moment, I completely shifted my perspective on service. I memorized the names and favorite dishes of regular customers to provide personalized service, and I recommended new menu items to liven up conversations with guests. After meals, I conducted simple satisfaction surveys to gather feedback and continuously strived to improve based on their input. As a result, customers gradually began to trust me, voluntarily left generous tips, and later returned with more acquaintances.
This experience left me with a meaning beyond mere workplace life. Through this process, I realized that true perseverance doesn’t just mean enduring hardship; it stems from acknowledging shortcomings and striving to change. That perseverance remains a core principle in my life today. I personally experienced that no matter how small the task, giving it your best effort yields learning and growth opportunities that are never insignificant.
Career History (or experience demonstrating job skills)
During my university studies, I participated in a group project for the ‘Global Sourcing’ course. The assignment required selecting a company and analyzing its industry supply chain. As the team leader, I proactively guided the project. We chose ○○ Electronics as our target company and began investigating suppliers of glass, the primary material for LCD panels—a core component of their products. Through this process, I gained a concrete understanding of the supply chain flow across the entire TV industry—from the glass purchasing stage, through LCD panel manufacturing, TV assembly, distribution and storage, sales, to the end consumer. Specifically, I analyzed the impact of ○○ Corning’s proprietary technology and patents in the glass manufacturing sector on the market structure, gaining insight into the structural characteristics formed by technological monopolies within the industry.
After graduation, I immediately began my career, simultaneously handling production-related quality control and distribution tasks to gain practical experience. Currently, I serve as a department senior in a business unit, managing staff and handling various document-related duties. I also provide continuous support and feedback, such as preparing hands-on training and work guides to enhance new employees’ understanding of their roles and boost their productivity. Through these experiences, I have consistently sought and implemented ways to elevate not just individual task execution, but also the growth of team members and the overall efficiency of the department within the organization.
This journey has provided me with a comprehensive understanding of the entire supply chain, broadening my experience to encompass production, distribution, and organizational management in real industrial settings. I am confident this foundation will serve as a strength in diverse future work environments.
Motto and Life Philosophy
Helen Keller once said, “Character cannot be developed in ease and quiet. It is only through trial and suffering that the soul is strengthened, ambition is inspired, and success is achieved.” This statement deeply resonates with me whenever I reflect on my life. I too have learned through experience that people grow deeper and stronger when navigating rough and rugged paths, rather than walking easy ones.
For me, my father is undoubtedly my role model in life. He is someone who has attempted numerous businesses, experiencing repeated successes and failures. During that journey, he endured arduous and difficult times at times, yet he never gave up or stopped taking on new challenges. Even now, despite his advanced age, the way he still begins each morning with renewed hope deeply resonates with me and teaches me.
Of course, he may experience failure again in the future. But I know this: no matter what failure he faces, he will rise again. And I, too, having learned from his example, will stumble but never stay down. I believe life’s true brilliance lies not in never falling, but in the courage to rise again after stumbling. This belief has become a guiding principle in my life and will continue to shape my choices and actions.
Motivation for Application and Aspirations
During my final semester as a senior in college, I completed an internship in the production management department of a factory. During this internship, I learned step-by-step from basic tasks, becoming deeply captivated by the appeal of the ‘management’ role. Beyond simply mastering tasks, I found great fulfillment in coordinating the flow of the workplace and efficiently managing various elements. This experience was a decisive turning point in solidifying my career path.
After completing the internship, I clearly recognized the areas where I lacked as a manager and have consistently worked to address those shortcomings. I particularly realized the importance of computer skills in management roles and diligently prepared accordingly. I focused on enhancing my practical abilities while studying for certifications. Recently, I obtained the MOS certification, equipping myself with the capability to handle computer-related tasks seamlessly.
Of course, I cannot claim this journey was without shortcomings. However, my desire to learn was equally strong, and by acknowledging and addressing these gaps, I have grown step by step. It is on the foundation of this preparation and commitment that I am applying to your Production Management Department. I can confidently state that this is not mere interest, but a solid foundation built through practical experience and consistent preparation.
Should I be assigned to the Production Management Department, I will always approach my duties with the mindset of a beginner, fulfilling my responsibilities diligently and faithfully. Furthermore, as time passes and I gain experience, growing to the point where I can smoothly handle tasks independently, I aspire to become a manager who actively contemplates and implements various measures for efficient production. For instance, I aim to be a manager who can propose practical improvements, such as cost reduction or work time reduction. I aspire to be not merely an executor but a talent who understands the field and can drive change.
With these goals and commitments in mind, I sincerely apply to your company. I promise to be a member who fulfills assigned responsibilities and continuously learns and grows.
