How to Incorporate Sales Experience into a Service Industry Resume

This blog post introduces examples of sales experience you can use in your service industry resume.

Growth Process

“I found my path forward by observing my parents.”
My parents ran a business. While operating a factory producing clothing and apparel products, the factory faced a major crisis when, unfortunately, a manager embezzled funds and fled. With the manager having taken all the factory’s funds, there was no immediate capital to operate, and no clear way to recover. For the first time, my parents showed deep despair. Our home fell silent during that period; we endured a dark time in utter quiet. Even now, recalling that time feels like dark clouds covering our home’s ceiling.
Yet, it was ‘people’ who found hope within that despair. The warm support from those around us became our greatest strength. My parents were well-known for their integrity and sincerity. They were also generous; when they had extra, they shared surplus products, and when they cooked delicious food, they never hesitated to share it. They maintained exceptionally transparent and trustworthy relationships with their business partners. Even when profit remained, they would return every last penny, striving for mutually beneficial business practices. This earned them the trust of those around them, which in turn allowed them to receive significant help during difficult times. Ultimately, my parents overcame that crisis and rose again.
Witnessing that miracle gave me a profound realization. I sensed that the world isn’t as harsh as one might think, and that if you live honestly, you will eventually see the light. Since then, I resolved to always be an honest and reliable person. Whether in friendships, romantic relationships, senior-junior relationships, or relationships with teachers, I always strived to build clean relationships as a reliable and honest person. Perhaps because of that effort, I now have many people around me who trust me and stand by me.
Through this experience, I learned that the most important thing in life is relationships with people. Because the world is a place where we help each other and grow together, I realized that living honestly and building trust with people is ultimately the greatest asset.

School Life

“I opened my eyes to sales and seriously felt the value of money.”
During my college years, my biggest grievance was ‘fair pay.’ My young mind wondered, ‘Why do people who just hang around get paid when I’m doing all the store work?’ And above all, the money you could earn as a college student was really small, but the expenses you had to cover were huge. Tuition, living costs, and even the price of books needed for studying – I couldn’t rely on my parents for all that money. My parents worked hard at tough jobs to make ends meet, and I wanted to lighten their burden, so I started part-time work. Along the way, I went through a lot of trial and error trying to find a ‘high-paying part-time job,’ but I eventually realized that ‘sales’ was the best fit.
My first sales experience began working at an airport duty-free shop. What I learned then was that beyond regular pay, commissions gradually increased each time I hit certain sales targets. Receiving rewards for meeting those goals made me realize a new way to earn money, and I gradually discovered the appeal of sales. Of course, I had to work desperately hard, and interacting with people was sometimes tough, but the significant rewards made it deeply rewarding.
Thanks to that experience, I became the first among my peers to cover my own tuition and living expenses. It was a time when I genuinely felt the value of money simply because I was spending money I had earned myself. From then on, I stopped spending carelessly and began consuming more deliberately. Most importantly, I learned to distinguish whether what I was buying was truly essential or merely a luxury item. Whereas in high school I only knew about snacks and cosmetics, I now meticulously track prices, sales, and purchasing channels for everything from manufactured goods to various household items. By buying products through multiple channels, I personally experienced which routes were cheaper and which services were more satisfying.
That experience taught me a valuable lesson. It made me realize there was value beyond simply earning and spending money, and because of that, I continue to explore the appeal of sales. I now possess insights into the value of money and how to manage it efficiently, which has become an important asset in my life.

An experience related to honesty
“I did not limit my responsibilities nor did I shift blame onto others.”
This story comes from when I worked part-time at a convenience store. At the time, I was a senior in college. Since I couldn’t work full days, I worked at the convenience store from dawn until morning, then went to school to study, filling my days that way. The owner saw how diligently I worked and placed special trust in me, which led to me being given more responsibilities. My pay was raised accordingly. One day, when the boss was hiring for an afternoon shift, he asked me who I thought would be good. I had interviewed a friend and learned he was in a very difficult situation. Both his parents had passed away, and he had to take care of his younger siblings. It was a truly heartbreaking and unfortunate situation. So, I suggested hiring him. After that, the friend became so overwhelmed that after finishing work at the convenience store, they ran away with the money they had saved, and it was even discovered they had stolen merchandise. The boss comforted me, saying, ‘It’s not your fault,’ but I felt it was my fault since I had contributed to hiring them. So, I offered to work overtime for free, even if it took more of my time, to cover the amount of money the friend had stolen. The boss tried to dissuade me, but I was determined not to shirk my responsibility. I resolved to follow my conscience to the end, refusing to draw a line saying, “My responsibility ends here.” I completed the work with a sense of duty until the very last moment. Of course, the extra shift was physically demanding, but after finishing it, I felt an odd sense of joy. Above all, I felt a deep sense of pride for having kept my conscience intact. This moment remains a deeply meaningful memory because it allowed me to uphold my personal motto, the words I always keep close to my heart: ‘Live with certainty and honesty.’

Post-employment aspirations

“I will strive to become an employee who dedicates every minute and every second to building expertise.”
During a difficult period while preparing for employment, I read a book titled ‘Gift’. As soon as I opened the cover, I wondered, “What exactly is a gift?” Only after closing the book did I realize that the gift was ‘the present moment’. Every person is given the moment called ‘now’. However, only those who understand how great and precious that moment is, and above all, that once it passes it never returns, and that these moments accumulate to ultimately shape my future, can achieve greater dreams. Reading this book deeply moved me, and I resolved to live for ‘now’ rather than ‘the future’. So I made plans, challenged myself without distinguishing between what I could and couldn’t do, and always focused on enjoying every moment.
If I join your company, my goal will be to become a ‘professional employee’. Every minute, every second is precious time, and I will cherish it gratefully. Furthermore, I will always remember that this time is the time I dreamed of working at ○○ Retail, and I will fill it meaningfully. I understand that every moment is an opportunity for growth. I will seek out and learn what I don’t know, constantly reflect on what I should do, and act accordingly. I will be an employee who never stops asking, “What do I need right now?” and who never ceases striving to fill in my gaps.
After joining, I will do my utmost to contribute to your company’s development as a professional talent. Thank you.
