In this blog post, I will reflect on the efforts I put into my studies, my learning experiences, the meaningful school activities I participated in, and examples of how I practiced consideration, sharing, and cooperation, and summarize what I learned.
Academic Experiences and Reflections
While attending high school, my interest in fashion grew steadily. To ensure this interest didn’t remain merely a passing fancy, I pondered how to balance my studies with my passion. I decided to create a concrete plan for what I needed to prepare to enter a fashion design program, without neglecting my core academic subjects.
First, I researched universities with fashion design programs and compared my academic standing to the average college entrance exam scores and admission data of successful applicants. As a result, I made specific notes on the subjects and areas where I was lacking and outlined exactly what I needed to improve in each subject. For example, I identified that I needed to strengthen my vocabulary in English and improve my ability to apply mathematical concepts to solve problems, thereby setting clear priorities for my daily studies.
I also reviewed the curriculum I would be studying after admission to better understand the subjects and content covered in the fashion design program. Believing that building a foundation of knowledge in my major would be helpful for my actual studies, I searched for relevant materials and collected fashion magazines to organize trends and terminology.
By organizing the materials and clippings I had gathered, I classified trends by era and categorized terminology, building a visual archive of resources. Thanks to this preparation and planning, my grades in the subjects where I was lacking improved, and my overall GPA rose as well. Above all, the ability to realistically envision the curriculum of the Fashion Design Department was a major achievement.
Compared to when I initially studied aimlessly without a plan, I realized that setting goals and studying systematically was far more efficient. As I achieved tangible results, I felt a sense of pride in having found a study method that suited me, and I reflected on how I had wasted time in the past without a plan. Since then, I have resolved to make plans before taking action in everything I do.
Major School Activities and Reflections
As an all-girls high school, our school had various clubs related to clothing, such as a makeup club, a fashion club, and a clothing alteration club. Among these, I applied to the fashion design club because I wanted to learn pattern making from the ground up. After being accepted, I learned step by step, starting with how to use a sewing machine. Since sewing skills improve in proportion to the amount of practice, I would come to the club room whenever I had free time to practice repeatedly.
The upperclassmen taught me the basics with great care, and I listened intently, taking notes and sometimes recording their explanations so I wouldn’t miss a single word. This attitude of building a solid foundation led to confidence in my later work.
When we decided to each create a piece for the upcoming festival, I began gathering materials in earnest. I analyzed the scrapbook materials I had collected over time and the fashion trends popular at the time to solidify the design I wanted to express. After sketching out my ideas, I sought advice from my seniors, received feedback, made revisions at home, and then began production.
Although I started the production process later than my peers, rather than getting discouraged by the time constraints, I approached it with the mindset of doing my best within the time I had. Once the initial design was complete, I personally recruited a model to take measurements and refined the design by addressing any shortcomings. When I finished the final piece, I was thrilled to see a result that was far more satisfying than my initial work.
For the fashion show, I collaborated with the makeup club to explain the concept and prepare the makeup together, and we conducted a final check a week before the festival to ensure everything was perfect. When my outfit closed the show, I felt a sense of joy as if all my hard work had finally paid off.
Through this activity, I reaffirmed my goal of majoring in fashion design and learned firsthand the importance of foundational work, preparation through trend analysis, and the balance between application and individuality. I also deeply realized that data-driven analysis and preparation—rather than mere “personal ideas”—lead to better results.
Writing About Examples of Consideration, Sharing, and Cooperation, and My Reflections
We had the opportunity to run a class-wide flea market at the school festival. My classmates and I collected items we no longer used to sell, and we decided to donate the proceeds in our class’s name. Since I’m very interested in fashion, I had a lot of unworn clothes, and even though it was a bit of a shame, I boldly brought them in to sell, knowing they would be put to good use.
My classmates, who knew my usual fashion taste, as well as students from other classes, showed interest in my items, so they sold relatively quickly. It was joyful and rewarding to see the clothes I had considered useless find new owners and be put to practical use. Above all, the fact that we were able to generate proceeds and make a donation so quickly brought me great happiness.
Through this experience, I felt the joy of sharing and giving, and I found myself thinking that if I had known that joy sooner, I would have donated the clothes to those in need from the very beginning. At the same time, I realized I needed to be more careful when buying clothes. Instead of buying things impulsively just because “I like them,” I started to consider whether I really need them, if I can wear them for a long time, and if they fit me well.
After that, I decided to develop the habit of organizing my clothes twice a year—once in the first half and once in the second half of the year. I resolved to either sell or donate the clothes I sorted out, and to that end, I vowed to take even better care of my clothes on a daily basis. To manage my clothes properly, I studied care instructions and storage methods for different fabrics, which fostered a sense of responsibility and affection for my clothing as someone who handles garments.
The flea market was a precious experience that taught me more than just how to sell; it taught me the importance of caring for and maintaining clothes, as well as the joy of giving. I remember it as one of the most valuable experiences of my high school years, and I intend to never forget this attitude toward possessions or this spirit of consideration for others.
