This blog post examines the step-by-step logic for writing a Mathematics Education academic plan that links personal experiences with mathematics to educational philosophy and career goals, while specifically outlining the key points evaluators focus on.
Reason for Pursuing the Major (Why I Chose This Major)
I hated math class the most in middle school. I often complained to friends about not understanding why we had to memorize math formulas. Having built a wall around math, I entered high school. However, after meeting a math teacher who would completely transform my life, I began to change 180 degrees.
This teacher developed hands-on math experiment materials that allowed students to physically experience the complex formulas and principles found in textbooks. Thanks to him, I found math enjoyable, and my grades steadily improved. I discovered the thrill of approaching problems from multiple angles and finding solutions, which made me fascinated by the subject.
When friends asked me math questions, I realized teaching them suited my aptitude. This experience gave me confidence that if I became a math teacher, I could truly enjoy teaching the subject. My dream is to graduate from your university’s Department of Mathematics Education, obtain my teaching certification, and create well-structured math textbooks that help students comfortably approach mathematical content and concepts.
Academic Plan and Goals
Upon entering university, I will make the most of my time as a student to learn various subjects and gain extensive experience. In my first year, I plan to study foreign languages like English and Japanese, and gain a deeper understanding of computers to obtain the Information Processing Technician certification. By my second year, I will set aside other studies and focus intensely on my major courses, striving to become an outstanding scholar. Beyond the teaching theory of mathematics required for a math teacher, I will actively participate in major courses and projects related to various fields. This will transform me into a capable professional with diverse and broad expertise and skills.
I aspire to become an instructional designer who develops high-quality math education content, leveraging my major in math education. I will build the foundation at your institution to develop diverse learning media and propose the most suitable learning methods to maximize learning effectiveness.
Post-Graduation Plans
In the United States, mathematics is transforming from a subject focused solely on solving problems on a blackboard into one that allows students to experience how it manifests in real life. For Korea to spark students’ interest in mathematics as a fundamental science, we must shift from merely solving problems to an education that emphasizes real-world applications. After graduation, as I walk the path of a math teacher, I want to pour my passion into developing and teaching fun math content so students can truly engage with math with genuine interest.
I believe the teaching profession is a rewarding position that builds students’ confidence. Just as my high school mentor introduced me to the fascinating new world of math when I had no interest in it, I aspire to be that kind of teacher. I aspire to be a charismatic teacher who instills confidence and a positive self-image in students, showing them they can achieve anything if they set their mind to it, and who can confidently present the basis for that hope. I want to be that kind of wonderful teacher.
Self-Introduction (Life Philosophy, Values)
Teachers consciously or unconsciously exert a profound influence on students’ character development. It goes without saying that the teacher’s role is crucial in fostering hopeful thinking, a sound outlook on life, and teaching students to live productively—especially since teachers are the ones students see and feel alongside them in the same space. Therefore, teachers must first become true human beings themselves. As someone dreaming of becoming a future teacher, I am striving above all to cultivate proper character.
If teachers possess sound values, students can observe and learn from them, forming positive mindsets and growing into creative individuals. In the distant future, I will strive to cultivate a warm sensibility within myself first. This will enable me to become a teacher who embraces students with constant care, a warm gaze, and a sincere heart, guiding them onto the right path.
